We use serveral servers with Ubuntu and do a lot of experimenting on them. Follow menu links to various subjects and articles about expleriences.
But which Linux will we choose?
First of all you need to make a selection based on your hardware or VPS. Mostly it will be a 64 bits CPU architecture.
We run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as well as the latest Ubuntu 16.04 server. Read this if you are looking for a step-by-step installation guide.
Are we on 32 or 64 bit?
This needs to be determined to select the right Ubuntu MinimalCD.
To find information about your CPU including architecture, execute lscpu in terminal.

For Intel systems, the Vendor ID is: GenuineIntel. For AMD it is: AuthenticAMD. But they are compatible. It is a bit of an historical artifact in that AMD was the creator of the 64 bit 'long' mode, and later Intel matched that creation. Naming often refers to any 64 bit binary as an AMD/64bit format, usually with the label 'AMD64'.
